Väre and Capalo AI have signed a strategic partnership to scale up Finland’s largest battery-based virtual power plant

Helsinki, Finland, 23nd of April 2025  – Väre Oy and Capalo AI Oy have signed a strategic agreement that enables batteries owned by businesses and households to participate in all Finnish ancillary markets and the Nord Pool wholesale markets.

The partnership covers wholesale trading and balance responsibility for battery assets, and enables new business models for companies, residential customers, and utility-scale renewable energy producers. The batteries will gain access to all Fingrid ancillary markets as well as to Nord Pool’s day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.

Finland’s day-ahead prices are among the most volatile in Europe, creating challenges for power system balance and causing uncertainty among energy consumers at various scales. Batteries help smooth the volatility that comes with wind and solar production, stabilize the grid, and thus accelerate the green transition. Combined with multi-market optimization, batteries allow businesses and households to protect against market volatility.

Until now, most distributed batteries have only been able to access some of Fingrid’s ancillary markets. The cooperation between Väre and Capalo AI enables the use of decentralized batteries’ flexibility in all Finnish electricity markets, maximizing returns while supporting grid balance.

The arrangement combines Capalo AI’s AI-driven and optimization and trading capabilities across all ancillary and wholesale markets with Väre’s expertise in large-scale customer management and user-friendly services.

Capalo AI CEO Henri Taskinen looks forward to the launch: “Our partnership with Väre enables the delivery of Finland’s most versatile flexibility service to businesses and households, and extends our service also to utility-scale renewable energy producers.”

Capalo AI already optimizes and trades large-scale batteries connected directly to the transmission and distribution grids across all ancillary markets and on Nord Pool. The partnership allows the same breadth of opportunity to Väre’s corporate and residential clients.

The collaboration unlocks new revenue streams for owners of distributed batteries and for Väre’s customers because, until now, trading has been limited to a narrow set of ancillary market products available through independent aggregation*. The agreement’s portfolio already includes hundreds of batteries in homes, businesses, renewable energy parks, and stand-alone sites.

Väre CEO Juha Keski-Karhu sees clear advantages in the partnership: “Working with Capalo AI aligns perfectly with our renewed strategy and goal to develop and offer new services that help customers benefit from the ongoing transformation of the power market. This agreement enables us to provide even better services to different kinds of electricity users and producers.”
