OPTIMIZATION ENGINEER
Capalo AI is a leading sustainable tech company specializing in optimizing energy storage systems. We maximize the value of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across all electricity markets by combining the most accurate forecast data with cutting-edge AI and optimization models. Our energy storage trading and optimization technology accelerates the green transition substantially by enabling weather-dependent renewable energy sources to grow more rapidly and their produced energy to be utilized the most effectively. We are looking for a talented, motivated, and self-directed
OPTIMIZATION ENGINEER
to join our team. Capalo AIʼs virtual power plant optimizes hundreds of distributed battery energy-storage systems (BESS) as a single trading portfolio. Because assets are dispatched collectively, the revenue they earn must be distributed ex-post with mathematical precision and total transparency. As our Optimization Engineer, you will design, implement and continuously refine the algorithms that turn aggregated market income into fair, auditable payouts for every asset owner. Your work will sit at the intersection of quantitative research, software engineering and energy-market operations, ensuring that each customer is rewarded in proportion to their true contribution while enabling Capalo AI to scale confidently across new markets and asset classes.
You will join a cross-functional algorithmic engineering squad—alongside optimisation, data and backend engineers—and collaborate closely with Trading, Finance and Customer Success to embed revenue-splitting logic deep into our settlement pipeline.

You’ll contribute by:
- Algorithm design and optimisation: Invent and formalise revenue-allocation models that accommodate heterogeneous battery sizes, durations and operating constraints, leveraging optimisation theory and statistical estimation
- Prototype to production: Build high-performance Python modules that convert hourly market cash-flows into per-asset statements; write robust tests, documentation and CI pipelines to guarantee correctness and reproducibility
- Data analysis and simulation: Develop simulations to benchmark fairness, sensitivity and edge-case behaviour of allocation methods under realistic trading scenarios and price volatility
- System integration: Expose allocation results via APIs and data warehousing layers so that Finance can generate invoices and customers can view earnings in the Capalo AI portal
- Continuous improvement: Monitor model fairness and code performance, gather stakeholder feedback and iterate on metrics and heuristics to keep pace with changing market designs, asset mixes and regulatory guidance
- Documentation and compliance: Maintain rigorous technical documentation and contribute to internal policy that underpins transparent, defendable revenue settlement
Your prior experience, knowledge and skills:
- Solid background in applied mathematics, optimisation, operations research or game theory—ideally MSc/PhD or equivalent industry experience
- Advanced Python programming skills (NumPy, pandas, optimisation libraries such as Scipy/CVXPy); good software-engineering practices (version control, testing, code review)
- Ability to translate mathematical models into reliable, production-grade services
- Creative problem-solving abilities to address open-ended challenges where “right answers” are not obvious
- Accountability in taking end-to-end ownership in a fast-moving scale-up environment
- Collaboration skills and crisp written and verbal communication; ability to simplify complexity for diverse audiences
- Growth mindset—eager to learn new mathematical techniques, domain specifics and engineering patterns as the company expands
Value-adding attributes:
- Familiarity with electricity-market mechanics or battery energy-storage characteristics
- Experience designing fair-allocation schemes (revenue or cost) in multi-stakeholder settings
