Capalo AI has signed an agreement to optimize and trade a 30MW/30MWh BESS in Riihimäki, Finland
Helsinki, 26.6.2025—Capalo AI, a sustainable technology company specialising in trading, optimization, and aggregation services for energy storage, has signed a new agreement with Kaunolan sähkövarasto Oy to optimize a 30MW/30MWh battery energy storage system in Riihimäki, Finland. The system is owned by Skip Wind 5 Oy, a Finnish holding company owned by Ardian Clean Energy Evergreen Fund (ACEEF) as part of its long-term clean energy strategy in the Nordics.
The 30MW battery will be optimized as part of the Capalo Zeus VPP – the largest virtual power plant in Finland. The asset will be traded along with many other large-scale batteries, such as Ardian’s Mertaniemi 38.5MW/43MWh asset. Capalo Zeus VPP participates fully automatically in all Finnish ancillary markets (FFR, FCR-D, FCR-N, aFRR, mFRR) and wholesale markets (Spot and Intraday). The AI-based optimization ensures that the asset delivers both grid stability and maximizes financial returns over the asset’s whole lifetime.
The Riihimäki project follows Ardian’s first Finnish BESS investment in Mertaniemi, which entered commercial operation in spring 2025. Capalo AI, together with other project stakeholders, brought the BESS to the wholesale and ancillary markets within weeks after the commissioning. With the addition of Riihimäki, ACEEF brings its total Finnish battery storage capacity to 68.5MW. eNordic, Ardian’s operating platform in Finland, leads the investment and project execution.

Thanks to its rapidly growing renewable capacity and market-driven approach to grid balancing, the Finnish market has proven an attractive environment for battery investments. The Riihimäki and Mertaniemi assets, together with other large-scale batteries, will further enhance the resilience of the Finnish grid.
“Mertaniemi has shown that a well-optimized battery can deliver both technical value to the grid and good financial returns. With Riihimäki, we continue with Capalo AI as our trading and optimization partner to ensure the asset performs reliably across all markets. Their approach has proven effective, and we expect this project to contribute meaningfully to both system stability and investor returns,” said Eero Auranne, Chairman of the Board at eNordic Oy and Skip Wind 5 Oy.
”We’re glad to expand our partnership with eNordic with another large-scale battery asset traded on Zeus VPP. Our collaboration has been seamless, and it’s excellent to continue delivering stability for the Finnish grid together,” said Henri Taskinen, CEO of Capalo AI.
The developer of the Riihimäki BESS project is eNordic, Ardian’s local platform for energy infrastructure in the Nordics. Ardian is a global private investment firm with over €180 billion in assets under management and headquartered in Paris. The project is financed by the Ardian Clean Energy Evergreen Fund, which also co-invested in the Mertaniemi BESS in Lappeenranta together with Lappeenrannan Energia, a local municipal energy utility.
Capalo AI is a sustainable tech company that maximizes the value of energy storage systems across all markets. We combine the most accurate forecast data with cutting-edge AI models to optimize the trading of battery energy storage systems.
